Cllr. Regan stated that “the fundamental question is not whether the actions of Mr. Ahern warrant the loss of leadership of FF or the fall of this Government but rather what if any standards does this Government consider apply in public office. Ministers Hanafin, Ahern and Cowen in saying the Taoiseach did nothing wrong are in effect saying that no standards apply to them.”

“If this is the message to the Irish public it can only add to public cynicism of politicians and politics alike and further undermine Irish democracy. It also signals to the Irish public that the costly and lengthy Tribunals investigating abuses of public office have changed nothing in what this Government considers acceptable standards in public office.” Cllr.
